Department for Education (DfE)

  • Government department created in May 2010 - previously called the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
  • Focused on raising standards in education, lifting more children out of poverty and re-engaging disaffected young people.

  • There are 126 Education Business Partnership Organisations working in 11 regions across the UK, supported by the Iebe.

  • Institute for Education Business Excellence.
  • The IEBE is the umbrella organisation and national voice for 126 Education Business Partnership Organisations working in 11 regions across the UK. It is a membership organisation with a growing number of associate and business members.

  • Local authorities.
  • Previously known as local education authorities (LEAs).
  • Provides a wide range of services to support schools.

  • Learning and Skills Council.
  • Exists to make England better skilled and more competitive.

NCEE

  • National Council for Educational Excellence.
  • Created by Gordon Brown in 2007 to bring together influential business people and leaders in education, and mobilise them to work together.
  • The NCEE also advises the Government on strategy and measures to achieve world-class education.

NCLSCS

  • National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services.
  • Government funded and offers head teachers and school leaders opportunities for professional leadership development.

Ofqual

  • Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator.
  • New regulator of qualifications, exams and tests in England (formerly a responsibility of QCA - see above).

Ofsted

  • The Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills.
  • Ofsted is the official body for inspecting schools and has responsibility for inspecting and regulating care for children and young people, and inspecting education and training for learners of all ages.

  • Formerly QCA.
  • Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency.
  • In England, QCDA develops the curriculum, improves and delivers assessments, and reviews and reforms qualifications.
  • Will work with businesses on qualifications that help people get the right skills.

SSCs

  • Sector Skills Councils.
  • State-sponsored, employer-led organisations that cover specific economic sectors in the United Kingdom. They have four key goals focused on reducing skills gaps and shortages; improving productivity; boosting skills of sector workforces; and improving learning supply.
