Overview
Local authorities (LAs) were previously known as local education authorities (LEAs).
Role
Local authorities act as a central source of information for all issues related to education, including adult and community education, childcare, extra-curricular activities, grants, libraries, parental support, schools and colleges, training and development and youth support.
They provide a range of services to support schools, including information about advisory, finance, personnel and information and communications technology services. They also cover school management, special educational needs support services and services for governors.
