Classroom talks to students

Employees can engage with education through informing students about their work or industry in the form of company presentations, workshops, business simulations and work shadowing. They can also help prepare students for the competitive world of work by holding mock job interviews at the school/college.

Employees will need to discuss with the schools/colleges which activity would best suit their students' needs.

Company presentations

As an expert on a particular business or industry, employees can give short talks or presentations in schools, explaining the skills required, the day-to-day activities, opportunities for promotion, pay scales, and so on.

Students will see curriculum subjects come to life and become motivated in starting to make career choices, while employees have the opportunity to practise their presentation skills.

Workshops

Employees can hold workshops in local schools with small groups of students at a time. In the workshops, the students participate in an interactive training session, in which they learn more about the employer's business and what is involved.

Workshops are an exciting and practical addition to classroom-based learning, where students can apply their skills to solve real, business problems. Employees can often find out more about the business in which they work in their preparation for the workshop. They may also discover different, more effective and efficient ways to work in their own job through interacting with the students.

Business simulations

Employees could help to facilitate sessions in which students learn about the world of work and engage in interactive activities to put their new knowledge into practice. Students can either set up their own small companies or analyse and solve business problems.

The skills that students can learn from business simulations - such as teamwork, financial management and leadership - will help them when they leave school and start work. Employees can identify gaps in their own knowledge when looking at their job from a student's perspective; they can also develop their skills and learn more about their role through working with the students.

Mock interviews

Many schools ask local employers to help prepare students for the interviews that they will encounter for jobs and/or university. Employees can help schools by holding mock interviews at the school.

Mock interviews are a great opportunity for students to improve their confidence and self-presentation, and find out exactly what employers are looking for. The employees, meanwhile, can learn or brush up on their interviewing techniques.
