Workplace visits
Employers can run short workplace visits to help small groups of students to improve their understanding of the workplace. The visits usually last for an hour or two, although in bigger, busier workplaces, a visit can last for as long as a day.
Benefits for employers
- Workplace visits are on employers' premises and are convenient for employers who find it difficult to travel to schools.
- They are an especially useful means of raising awareness and understanding of sectors of employment that are best explained by direct, real-life examples.
- Some employers use workplace visits as a means to recruit interested young people to part-time positions.
Benefits for students
- Students have a glimpse of real working life.
- They are able to increase their understanding of a particular type of work/industry.
- This is particularly useful for sectors that are not well known to young people as more obvious choices: students can learn about a type of work that might interest them but which they have not learnt about before.
- Visits can support particular courses and qualifications, such as Diplomas.
Getting started
- The Institute for Education Business Excellence (IEBE) website contains contact information for work experience organisers throughout the country. Trident also acts as a broker between schools/colleges and businesses.
